Facebook History From 2004 to 2011

Facebook has recently come up with some more changes on their privacy settings. Users can now share information with selected groups of friends, while restricting the others on their friends list. This update of the social network is one among many which came before it and many which are still yet to come. Facebook is a constantly changing platform. From the Harvard dorm room to a multi million dollars company, Facebook has come a long way. And a well carved way that too. In this article we will list down the major changes which took place in Facebook, the changes which have helped the social network to revolutionise the way we communicate on the Internet, the changes which have helped Facebook to earn it's current status. The changes which helped Facebook have amass a staggering 750million active users worldwide. It all started back in February 2004 when Facebook was launched from the Harvard dorm room. It was an instant hit with all the students and within one months time, it expanded to Columbia, Standford and Yale. Seeing the huge demand and to accommodate the influx of users , Facebook headquarters was shifted to California in the month of June of the same year. Where operations on Facebook took a serious form. Mark Zuckerberg dropped out from Harvard to work full time on his venture, to make it better and more powerful. The Profile feature Wall along with the Groups were the latest addition to Facebook at that point of time. The Wall and Groups form some of the most important features on Facebook today. In December 2004 Facebook reached it's first milestone: 1 million users. A feat which hardly a year old company should be very proud of. And they were. Year 2005 only saw them advance higher. They expanded to almost 800 colleges networks in a span of 6-7 months. And the month of September saw them reaching to the high school networks, where they were successful again. This year also saw Facebook drop the 'The' and become only Facebook. The url of Facebook read facebook.com instead of thefacebook.com which is considered a major change in the social network's history. The application Photos were added in the month of October to the network about the same time when the network went international. With the rush of users into the platform it was only a matter of time before Facebook reached another milestone and it came to no surprise when they reached 5.5 million users by the end of the year. The year of 2006 saw Facebook going mobile and developing it's alliances. Microsoft and Facebook form a strategic relationship for banner ad syndication. The share feature on Facebook was also launched in this year. Which has revolutionised how we behave today on the web. This year Facebook was opened for everyone to use. So that anyone can join in now, with no restricted access. 2007 was a special year for Facebook. It formed major alliances with Microsot and other organisations. Facebook Platform launched with 65 developer partners and over 85 applications that year, giving it an unmeasurable reach. In accordance with it's extensive reach and exposure to people, it was only right to launch the Facebook Ads feature. 2008 saw the launch of the Facebook chat feature. It also launched it's application in languages like Spanish and French thus enabling it to reach even more users than before. The first issue of privacy was also paid heed with updates to privacy controls to include Friend List privacy. The end of 2009 Facebook had a total of 350million active users. More than any other social network on the web. Facebook also acquired FriendFeed in the August of 2009, to further expand it's growing base. The widely known feature 'Like' was also launched in this year. With the incoming of 2010, Facebook was the most searched item on the web. Their brilliant online campaigning and advertisement and also just their product got them all the attention. Chris Huges one of the co-founder at Facebook also worked with Barrack Obama, on his online campaign for the Presidential election in 2008. Thus enabling Facebook to be the most searched item on the web later. 2010 also saw the launch of the beta version of the feature Questions on Facebook along the Places feature. Allowing you to be in touch even when you are on the road. July of 2011 Facebook has released that it's total number of active users amount to 750 million. Ahead of all it's competitors by large numbers. Even today, Facebook is constantly improving. Constantly growing, so that it becomes a better platform for individuals to socialise on. It's constant improvement is what makes us stay on the network and be an active user. Networking has never been same since Facebook arrived and it's probably only going to improve in the future.
